Scardanelli (Audio Book)Opis:'Scardanelli', with texts and music from Harald Bergmann's acclaimed film of the same name, is presented by ECM as an "audio book" which reflects on Hölderlin's last years. This CD, like the film, was made primarily for the German-speaking lands, but following the widespread interest in earlier ECM German-language discs - including Bruno Ganz's Wenn Wasser ware and Hölderlin - 'Scardanelli' is being made available internationally. Harald Bergmann looks at Friedrich Hölderlin in the second half of his life, the 36 years the great poet spent, ill and supposedly mad, under the care of the carpenter Zimmer in his Tübingen tower, writing poems, drawing, playing piano. He called himself "Scardanelli" and this was the name with which he signed the poems that he gave away to visitors. Actor Walter Schmidinger, a major star in Germany, and known intentionally for his roles in Ingmar Bergmann's 'From the Life of the Marionettes' and 'The Serpent's Egg', Maximilian Schell's 'Tales from the Vienna Woods' and other films, is very convincing in the title role, bringing shades of disturbance, irascibility and suffering to his reading of the Scardanelli poems.

On this CD, the poems are interwoven with dialogues and the testimonies of contemporaries, including Hölderlin's first biographer Christoph Theodor Schwab, to create a compelling audio-drama. These contemporaries, hitherto known only from written documents, come to life here - and the music of Schubert, Mozart, Bach (as well as the original music of Peter Schneider with the "Scardanelli-Klavier") lifts the performance to another level of perception. At the album's end, the listener returns to the present-day as if from a journey through time.
